All You Need to Know About the REAL ID Deadline

The REAL ID deadline is upon us, and our Newport News Honda dealers have all the information you need about the new form of identification. Although it’s an optional upgrade from your old driver’s license, it’s ideal for traveling and visiting your friends and family on the military bases in our area. Here’s what you should know from the friendly pros at Casey Honda.
Why You Might Want a REAL ID
You can still legally drive using your old driver’s license, but there are a few reasons you might want to get your Virginia REAL ID. First and foremost, beginning in May 2025, you’ll no longer be able to board a domestic flight using your existing license—you’ll either need a REAL ID or other federally accepted identification, such as a U.S. passport or a military ID card.
You’ll also need a REAL ID to enter federal facilities, including the Hampton Roads military bases. So if you have loved ones stationed at places like the Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Naval Air Station Oceana, or any of the other bases in our community, get a REAL ID and the proper authorization to visit them.
REAL ID Versus Traditional Driver’s License
You might not notice many differences from your old license when you get your REAL ID. In Virginia, REAL IDs have a star in a circle in the upper right corner, but you’ll also see familiar information like your name, home address, and picture. These new ID cards are special, though: they include cutting-edge security features that make counterfeiting difficult.
